MOUNT HOPE, Bronx (WABC) -- A dog was found severely injured inside a trash can in the Mount Hope section of the Bronx on Monday.
The 2-year-old poodle was found near the bottom of the trash can, neighbors believe on the brink of death.
The building's super at 361 East 178th found the dog, believing it was badly abused, and left her for dead.
"I saw the dog in the hallways. It had the leg broken and bruises all over the face," said Gladys Vazquez, a resident.
Vazquez and other residents quickly grabbed blankets and fed the dog as they waited for police to arrive Monday morning.
Police say the poodle has injuries to its face and a broken leg.
The ASPCA took the dog to their animal hospital where she was treated, but workers there say it's too earlier to share a prognosis.
Vazquez says she would love to adopt the dog.
"I'm an animal lover. Who does that? I'm very interested in taking the dog," Vazquez said.
Police describe the incident as animal cruelty and are investigating.
